Ramallah - A qualified representation of Christian School staff took part yesterday, Wednesday, May 11, in a new public mobilization, organized in Ramallah, calling for the revision of the Social Security legislation approved by Palestinian authorities last March. The event - says abouna.org site - was also attended by Father Faisal Hijazin, Secretary General of the Council of Christian educational institutions and general manager of the Latin Patriarchate of schools in Jerusalem. "We took to the streets", said Father Faisal "to ask for the adoption of a law on social protection, which guarantees a dignified life for thousands of workers who work in schools coordinated by our Secretariat, and for all Palestinian workers employed in public institutions and in private companies". Trade unions and social organizations also presented a draft pension reform to Palestinian authorities, divided into 17 points.
Already in April Christian school workers had taken part in a similar event, to demand new representation in negotiations also for the 350 thousand workers in the private sector, and the establishment of a minimum unemployment benefit in favor of 400 thousand unemployed. The social security system at the moment does not safeguard the unemployed, housewives and the most elderly. >>
