Lima - The Pastoral Commission of Human Mobility of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference has launched the project "Prevention of human trafficking and smuggling of migrants in Peru: Strengthening of social networks for the prevention and assistance to victims at a national level and in border areas", in collaboration with the NGO "World Project MLAL" . The project aims to help reduce the social vulnerability of potential victims of trafficking and smuggling of migrants throughout the Peruvian territory, with particular attention to the border areas and in areas considered at risk.
According to information sent to Fides, one of the areas of focus of the project is the Apostolic Vicariate of Jaén, where, thanks to the support of His Exc. Mgr. Gilberto Vizcarra Mori, SJ., a training workshop for priests, religious, rural catechists and local authorities will take place, to establish networks and action plans on migration and human trafficking. The theme of the meeting is: human rights and migration, the Church's social teaching on migration, reality of trafficking in Peru. This is the start of constant pastoral work and in permanent coordination with government institutions and civil society in the area, to protect migrants and their families.
According to the latest report of the Commission delegated by Congress to follow this issue, entitled "National plan of action against human trafficking in Peru 2011-2016", Peru is considered a place of origin and transit for international trafficking. The first big problem is the lack of updated data. From 2004 to 2011, the National Police reported 974 victims , the areas with more victims are those within the country and the Amazon forest. The government itself informed that in 2011 the victims were 58% minors.
